Breaking Down the Meaning of the Enneagram

The word "Enneagram" comes from two Greek words: "ennea" meaning nine, and "gram" meaning diagram. Combined, it translates to a nine-pointed diagram. This symbol represents nine distinct personality types and how they interconnect.

It’s important to remember that no type is better or worse than another. Each number holds equal value, offering unique strengths and challenges. A crucial word of caution: as you begin to grasp this tool, remember that it’s meant for self-discovery, not for labelling or judging others. While we use numbers to identify personality types, these numbers are only a reference point:not the sum total of who we are.

For over seven years, the Enneagram has been central to my self-discovery. It’s helped me connect more deeply with my family and friends and strengthened my business relationships.

The Enneagram came into my life at the right time. I was building a career in real estate, believing it was my path. Then, during a coaching session to improve my business profile, I was asked a simple yet profound question: What is your biggest fear? Without hesitation, I replied: I’m afraid of running out of time.

That question stayed with me, echoing in my mind until I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Four weeks later, I resigned from my job. I didn’t have a clear plan, but I knew I needed answers. That’s when I discovered the Enneagram.

My journey led me to a retreat in Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, where I experienced the Enneagram in a group setting. Later that year, I traveled to Petaluma, San Francisco, to explore hypnosis and shamanic work. These transformative experiences set me on a path of self-discovery, growth, and deeper introspection.

Was it easy? Honestly, No. It was the hardest work I’ve ever done, but it was also been the most rewarding and fulfilling. Choosing to confront my fears brought immense clarity and relief. The Enneagram helped me understand myself in ways I never had before and embrace a life filled with depth and alignment with who I am. 

Looking back now, I realise my answer was, in fact, the right one all along; I just didn't finish it completely. What I meant to say was:  I was afraid of running out of time to do the work I love. Now, I have the courage to share my journey. By discovering my unique gift and understanding myself, I can help others do the same so they too can do the work they love, and not what they believe they have to.
